Artist Spotlight - Denise Virmont - September 21st - October 4th
What: Galaxy Cafe Artist Spotlight opening reception featuring Denise Virmont! Artist Spotlight - Ryk Shadix - September 7th - September 20th "I am a self taught artist and craftsman. I began woodworking in 1970 making fine furniture and wood turnings. By the year 2000 I began to have a craving for color after so many years of working with wood. It was during this time that I discovered my love for creating abstract art and began seriously painting and learning the techniques that I use today.
"I find that through my paintings I am able to express the feelings and concepts that I have been trying to for so many years through other mediums but in a much deeper and personally gratifying way.
"Abstract art speaks from and to the inner, intuitive nature of passionate being, our souls as some would say. The absence of recognizable form beckons the perceiver to go within and surrender the construct confines of the linear mental state and experience edgeless expanses of raw emotion; be that pleasure, pain, or whimsy. Abstract art must be sensed not analyzed, experienced not studied, entered not viewed."

Artist Spotlight - Nichole Macdonald - August 17th - September 6th Nichole was born in the foothills of California, where she grew up on a ranch with her parents, four brothers, baby sister, horses, cows, chickens, and ghosts. She started painting at a very early age, continuing her efforts in high school where she received awards and scholarships for her paintings, including one piece displayed in the Capital Building for a year. These interests led her to a career in graphic design when she moved to San Diego in 1999.
Nichole can be seen around town as she spends a lot of time dancing downtown, playing paddle ball at the beach, and shoplifting at Fashion Valley Mall. Nichole is known for her quick wit, friendly demeanor, and warm laughter. Being a single mom of a toddler, Nichole finds her free time very scarce but always fills it with creation.
Often asked where her inspiration comes from, Nichole really can't say. She suspects her ideas come to her in dreams. Her paintings often have a mixed media element, reflecting her versatility and fun personality. Her art is an inspiring reminder that no matter how busy your life gets, there's always time to stop and appreciate the beauty around us.

Artist Spotlight - Angela Damecki - July 20th - August 16th
Born in New Jersey and raised in San Diego, Angela Damecki is one of the few people fortunate enough to realize her life’s ambition at a very early age….and then act on it. Angela began painting on canvas when she was just seven, and she has been passionate about expressing herself artistically ever since. Her interest in the arts led her to explore other mediums, including collage, Venetian plaster, photography, ceramics, hand-blown glass, architecture, interior design and lighting design.
In 2003, Angela was awarded her Bachelor Degree in Architecture from Woodbury University. She followed that up with a working trip through 9 countries and 30 cities in Europe and South America, where she photographed the indigenous art and architecture for future design concepts and inspiration.
Upon her return, she formed her own design firm, specializing in creating harmonious artistic interiors by combining the arts with functional elements. To this day, painting remains Angela’s true passion. Her love of this art form has enabled her to develop a unique perspective on colors and dimensions that distinguishes all of her design work.

Artist Spotlight - Kathleen Huneke - June 29th - July 19th
"I've been painting in oils and acrylics for almost 40 years now. My newest paintings are heavily textured giving the illusion of movement as you walk past it. The texturing makes one want to 'reach out and touch' it. Making it interactive with the viewer.
"I also work in polymer clay, papier mache, and glass. The glasswork was quite unexpected. My home burned down in the Cedar Fire in October, 2003 and in the debris I found a beautiful piece of glass and collected it and more.

Artist Spotlight - Todd Rice - June 15th - June 28th
Born and raised in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, Todd Rice moved to the San Diego area in 1990. He has since continued his practice of clearing out his head by generating a wide assortment of art which both amuses and baffles its on-lookers. A fascination with brightly painted and shredded cardboard (which, as of late, has included the help of his 2 cats!) and assemblages keeps him very busy and out of the public eye. He is former member of the San Diego Art Institute and has 3 solo shows.

"For me, the figure is the ultimate artistic tool of expression; it is a familiar reference with a built in dictionary. This uncertainty of how a painting will be perceived is one of the most intriguing aspects of figurative art. Because the figure is the ideal expressive tool, I choose to use it to capture what I call “moments of epiphany,” which are spaces in time right before a change, whether monumental or simple, occurs. It is at these points when all possibilities are present and clear—all one has to do is commit to action.
"I want my larger than life, black figures to be hailed as beautiful images; but most important to me is that these figurative images are considered a universal artistic tool. A tool that can be used to describe anything; and the images will appeal to any viewer, regardless of their reference points.
"I attended US International University where I majored in Advertising Design, but I completed my BFA at Mississippi State University. I also hold an Associates Degree in Fashion Design from FIDM."

Artist Spotlight - Azucar - May 4th - May 24th
"I'm old enough to drink and young enough to still get carded (sometimes anyway). I've been around long enough to see a lot of beauty and just as much ugliness and have come to see that they often hold hands. I believe in the power of music, photographs, and words (probably in that order). I was schooled to be a writer and picked up a camera at some point to convey in images what I couldn't say in words."
"I like being enigmatic and I like my photos to have some sort of veiled, dark stories. I buck the idea of conventional beauty. I'm drawn to the things that are not normally considered beautiful. I don't do sunsets, I don't do flowers, I don't do anything that makes you say, "awww". I take photos the way they tell me I shouldn't and I think it suits me fine."

Artist Spotlight - Chanel and Christine Penley - February 16th - March 1st
Evil Revolution Studios is a joint effort by two sisters; Chanel and Christine Penley who have nothing else better to do in their lives than to torment people with their sinister comics. Most of their inspirations for the comics come from real life situations dealing with work, bad mornings, friends and family driving them nuts, traffic, run-ins with the law, and whatever else ruins their day.
Chanel handles the writing, coloring and layout of "Evil Kittens Revolt", as well as the coloring and layout of "Mr. Bones and Death." Christine handles the drawing and writing of “Mr. Bones” and the occasional writing for "Evil Kittens." "Mr. Bones and Death" is a little less foul mouthed, but definitely darker with its humor. Christine portrays her characters the way she and most people really feel: bitter, pissy, un-enthused and unsatisfied. She believes that someone else's pain can be funnier than someone else's joy.
Artist Spotlight - Ginger (aka "Fresh Ginga") - February 2nd - February 15th
Ginga, was raised in San Diego, without any formal exposure to the art world and its conventions, yet her reputation has risen to a considerable degree of prestige in the entertainment circles for her fashion pieces, art and music events, and other objets d'art.
1/8 Fresh Designs is her highly personalized "hot couture" fashion house that she started in 2003. Each piece is hand made by Ginga and depending on the degree of involvement on the part of the client, she adds nearly any desirable detail to the pieces she creates.
Galaxy Cafe Artist Spotlight - Rick Steiner - January 19th - February 1st
Originally hailing from Gloucester, Massachusetts, Rick was given his first camera at the age of 15. In 1985, Rick won first prize in a photography contest at Salem State College. He left the east coast in 2001 and moved to San Diego for a new beginning and to live openly as a gay man. In 2003, Rick was diagnosed with AIDS. In 2004, he fought and won a short battle with an AIDS related cancer. Rick has never had any proper photography training or classes. Most of his work is from walking around the neighborhoods of San Diego. He tries to focus on the beauty and color around him and capture what his eyes see and convey that in his photographs.

Dramatic, organic, otherworldly, and unique are some of the words that have been used to describe the work of this exciting new artist, Jeff Hoss. A San Diego native, he began his artistic career creating unusual faux finishes, which led to experimenting with an interesting mix of media and technique, creating the depth and movement evident in his compositions.
The visceral reaction that is felt by his artwork is best experienced through an in person viewing where the design, texture and color draw the senses in generating a compelling urge to look and touch. He has been painting and creating art work over 18 years.
What: Galaxy Cafe Artist Spotlight opening reception featuring Jeff Hoss Galaxy Cafe Artist Spotlight - Sean Dietrich - December 15th - January 4th
“Mixing the raw imagery, power, and controlled chaos of an industrial music influence, a very loose, sketchy, assault-with-an-x-acto-knife style, Dietrich has been able to create artwork that shows an incredible level of bleak and rambunctious emotions. Sean’s art has been described as about as far out in left field as you can go...”
Sean held his first art show at the age of five, self published his first comic book at 16, and several books, three years of live painting events, over 58 art awards, and a slew of upcoming projects later, Dietrich is still going strong.
